Inner Circle > December 2009
We only have one shot at having a clean environment. Let’s use new technology to improve the future of our globe by recycling our dated mercury-based thermostats, thermometers, fluorescent lights, and much more. It’s not just the right thing to do, but it is our duty to the future of our planet.

Mercury has become a contaminant of great concern. Mercury is found in the air, waterways, lakes, and the ocean. It is released into the air by the combustion of coal for electricity, and may be transported from the air to soil and water by rain. The mercury in urban storm water sediment results in part from improperly discarded fluorescent lights, electrical switches, thermometers, other mercury-containing devices, and historical and ongoing industrial activities. Methyl mercury is more hazardous to humans and other animals than elemental mercury. We do not know all the sources of methyl mercury, but evidence suggests that methyl mercury escapes landfills into the air. It is suspected that this is primarily due to chemical modification by bacteria which converts elemental mercury disposed in landfills to methyl mercury.

It didn't take long for Centennial's unit to be tested. An uncharacteristic three-and-out series to start the game was followed by a poor snap on a punt that gave Rancho Verde (11-1) its first possession at the Centennial 23. Centennial held Rancho Verde to a field-goal attempt that was blocked, a momentum boost Centennial coach Matt Logan labeled as "huge."

MORENO VALLEY - Corona Centennial's offense operates at warp speed, but on Friday, the unit had to play catch-up -- to the Centennial defense.

The Huskies smothered Moreno Valley Rancho Verde's high-scoring offense and quickly turned the Inland Conference quarterfinal showdown into a runaway. Centennial took charge in the second quarter and rolled to a 52-21 victory to reach the semifinals for the ninth time.

Centennial (10-2) will play at home against Temecula Chaparral in a rematch of last year's title game.

Terry Pierson / The Press-Enterprise
Corona Centennial's Cedric Smith runs back an interception against Rancho Verde in the first half of the Inland Division quarterfinal game.

The sequence was the start of a dominant performance by the Huskies' first unit. Centennial dismantled Rancho Verde's dangerous passing game, putting pressure on quarterback Travis Champion and allowing him to complete just 4 of 17 passes, sacking him three times and intercepting him once.

"We saw that not a lot of teams put pressure on him," Logan said. "Actually, we mixed it up. We came at him sometimes and pulled back sometimes."

Once Centennial's defense set the tone, the offense blew the game open. The Huskies piled up 31 points and 238 yards in the second quarter to take a 38-7 halftime lead. Denzel Hawkins scored three TDs in the quarter.Big numbers from the Centennial offense are nothing new, but the defense probably should get equal billing.

"No one who sees them on tape, no one who has to prepare for them overlooks them," Rancho Verde coach Pete Duffy said. "We saw just what we saw on tape: a bunch of big, strong, fast, well-coached, angry guys all over the field."

Lineman Lee Adams had two sacks and two other tackles for losses in the first half.

Regarding Holiday Trash Pick-Up
Despite holiday fun, this time of the year is subject to excessive amounts of waste including expired Christmas Trees. Know exactly how to properly dispose of your holiday trash.

NOTE: Normal Pick-Ups are Monday-Friday. With the Holiday, it pushes Friday Pick-Ups to Saturday. For Thurs 12/24 and Thurs 12/31, drivers tend to run ahead of schedule so residents are encouraged to put trash out the night before so as not to miss the Pick-Ups. Ever since we launched the Inner Circle for the City of Corona seven months ago, it’s had a service level agreement, 24/7 support, and has met all the standards of a non-beta service. More than 35,000 City of Corona residents receive the bi-weekly newsletter directing thousands to the InnerCircleCorona.com every week. We have focused our efforts on reaching out to the community and providing quality relevant information that makes where we all live, a safer and stronger community.

The “beta” will be removed from the site and newsletters today, we’ll continue to innovate and improve upon the service whether or no there’s a ‘beta’ on the logo. Today, we are announcing some other Inner Circle Corona features that we think will appeal to the community at large: expanded online newsletter, restaurant locator, forums, community groups with group forums, and local and highway traffic map.
