March 2010
One only needs to take a spin along Grand Boulevard and other well-established roadways in town to note that Corona has a wealth of beautiful historic homes representing a variety of architectural periods. From the sturdiness of a Craftsman bungalow and the whimsy of a Victorian to the old world charm of a Mediterranean/Spanish Revival, Corona has many architectural treasures that link the present with the past.

/Teen-Driving-Program/Screen-shot-2010-02-24-at-8-14-06-AM)
“Our Teen Driver" foundation is a non-profit organization on a mission to educate and inform parents of current and future teen drivers. We are dedicated to providing the most up to date driver education information to parents and students. With traffic related accidents being the number one cause of death among teenagers, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our teens. Yet when our teens reach the age of independence and are ready to drive, parents discover the programs once taught in our local schools are long gone and it seems the laws constantly change. High school driver education has fallen victim to budget cuts and policy changes.
Parents find themselves facing critical decisions in selecting their teen’s driver training and very few even know what questions to ask, let alone who to ask. Parents have nowhere to turn, until now! Please join us on Wednesday, March 10th at 6:30 p.m. at Corona High School[Map It!] for "An Hour with the Experts." This seminar is designed to answer questions and educate both parents and students alike.

Chic Cicchelli walked to the podium in the City Council Chambers with a spring in his step and a smile on his lips as Mayor Karen Spiegel recognized him as an “Extraordinary Volunteer” in the community.
/Recognizing-Extraordinary-Citizens/CouncilMeetingPic?width=278&height=165)
As a member of the City’s P.A.C.E. program (Parks and Code Enforcement), Mr. Cicchelli volunteers with the Code Enforcement Division of the Community Development Department. One of his duties is to collect illegal signs that are littered throughout neighborhoods. Each week, he collects about 300 signs and in the three years he has volunteered, it’s estimated that Mr. Cicchelli has collected nearly 47,000 illegal signs posted in City right of ways, on trees, and utility poles throughout Corona. For his service, Mr. Cicchelli was recognized as an “Extraordinary Volunteer”.
The City Awards program recognizes residents who selflessly contribute to our community. The program has three components: Celebrating Neighbors, Outstanding Youth, and Extraordinary Volunteers that are selected on a quarterly basis by a committee of citizens.
If you know of someone who goes above and beyond to make our community great, nominate them for a City Award! Applications are available on the City’s
website or by calling (951) 736-2370.

What Google is offering…
As you may have seen in the news, Google is offering a tremendous opportunity to communities across the nation. Google is planning to test ultra-high speed broadband networks ran on
fiber optics in one or more trial locations across the country that will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what is available to most Americans today. Google plans to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
How you can help…
The City of Corona has submitted an application to Google requesting that our community be selected for this exciting opportunity. What we need now is community participation, in the form of nominations from residents, community groups and business owners. Let Google know that Corona is THE BEST choice for their new ultra-high speed broadband network!
All you need is a Google account, if you don’t have one already, you’ll be prompted to create one.
Click here to nominate Corona now!

Lonie Paxton, a 1996 graduate of Centennial High School in Corona, has achieved enormous success in the NFL winning 3 super bowl championships with the New England Patriots. But Paxton has also made tremendous achievements off the field with the creation of the Active Force Foundation.
Shortly after high school, Paxton’s best friend and fellow Centennial graduate Brook Duquesnel was injured in a snowboarding accident which led the two of them to form The Active Force Foundation in 2003. The non-profit organization designs and donates special sports equipment to physically challenged athletes. “Our goal is for athletes to continue to be athletes – even if they’ve had a paralyzing injury,” explains Paxton.

Daniel Melendez to Michigan, with the woman, and eventually to a busted romance. But it also revived an interest and a career in doing murals. "Call it destiny or whatever it was, it was a weird circumstance," said Melendez, now a Corona resident.

Why should you participate in the 2010 Census? Because the information that the U.S. Census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent. What does this mean to you? Better infrastructure, more services, hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, emergency services, and more. Watch this 1 minute video for more information.
