The Corona-Norco Unified School District is being proactive in its endeavor to make our schools as safe as possible for students and staff. While there’s no way to eliminate the H1N1 virus, steps can certainly be taken to minimize the spread of it and other viruses this year and that is exactly what the officials are striving for.
When asked about particular concerns, Assistant Superintendent, David Hansen said, ‘One school we are especially concerned about is Victress Bowers since students there are already frail. As we do for all our students, we want to protect them and keep them safe.’
To that end an effort is being made at the district, school and classroom levels. Employees of CNUSD receive updates and information on the flu and symptoms. Posters and flyers have been disseminated throughout the district.

Last school year a case of swine flu at Lee Pollard High caused the school closing and cancellation of a number of events. The intent is that will not take place this year. While not at all dismissing the severity of H1N1, Dr. Frykman, Riverside County’s top health official has cautioned people to treat it like any other flu by maintaining good hygiene, keeping your hands away from your face and staying out of the public if you are sick.
As with any flu, CNUSD employees as well as students are sent home immediately if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. Once flu symptoms have been gone for 24 hours, people may return to school or work. Nurses and health clerks have received special training in evaluation and handling of potentially ill people.
All schools and district offices have been outfitted with hand sanitizer dispensers in high traffic areas. As well, precautionary methods of cleaning and eliminating germs have been put in place. Custodial staff are paying closer attention to push-doors, door knobs and other high contact areas.
On the classroom level, teachers are vigilantly using anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitizers. Special attention is being paid to ‘hands on’ classrooms such as computer and science labs.
Mr. Hansen says he wants parents and the community to know the district is taking every reasonable precaution to keep our children safe from this and other flues.
