Does Your Home Qualify for a Makeover?

One only needs to take a spin along Grand Boulevard and other well-established roadways in town to note that Corona has a wealth of beautiful old homes representing a variety of architectural periods. From the sturdiness of a Craftsman bungalow and the whimsy of a Victorian to the old world charm of a Mediterranean/Spanish Revival, Corona has many architectural treasures that link the present with the past.

Many of these vintage structures have been well maintained over the decades and represent the city’s rich architectural heritage. There are other homes greater than 50 years of age that are in need of repair, renovation or just plain “sprucing up” to renew their ageless charm and luster.

Money is hard to come by and today’s economy makes improvement projects more than a bit of a challenge to owners of historic homes wishing to upgrade their properties. Assistance is available from a local nonprofit organization to accomplish tasks such as painting, porch repair or restoration due to dry rot or termites, siding and shingle replacement, roof repair as well as other improvements to restore the architectural character to the exterior of older homes.

The Corona Historic Preservation Society (CHPS) recently implemented a grant program, or gift of money with a specific purpose, to defray some of the costs of materials to restore or refurbish the appearance of older homes in Corona. Criteria have been established. The CHPS program accepts applications identifying the scope of work and evaluates them.  Grant recipients will then do the work and submit invoices.  CHPS representatives will review and certify the completed work and award funds to the limit agreed upon. See the CHPS Web page for further details and information on this program. Application forms are available at Corona’s Community Development Department or you could visit the Heritage Room of the Corona Public Library.
