Dedicated by the City in 1971, Contreras Park is named after Miguel Zaragoza Contreras, who was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and the first Hispanic Corona resident killed in the Vietnam War in 1967. Centrally located in Corona, the park has recently undergone a much-needed renovation.
In 2007, Corona’s Department of Water and Power (CDWP) needed to provide additional water wells to meet the community’s growing demand for water. Since Contreras Park was identified as a location for a new water well and the park was in very poor condition, the Parks and Community Services worked together with CDWP to provide new public benefits to the community. The renovation allows for the construction of a water well while the park receives much needed improvements.
BLMA Landscape Architects created the park design and New Legacy constructed the park improvements. The enhancements include colored concrete walkways, horseshoe pit, park bench, drought tolerant landscaping, a perimeter block wall, area lighting, park bench, park monument sign, and a plaque and flag pole in memory of Miguel Contreras.
The new Contreras Park is scheduled to be re-dedicated on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. [Map]
