Bicycles for Children Donated 683 Bicycles to Local Children

Local Nonprofit Continues to Enhance the holidays for Local Students.

Just two days after receiving the Outstanding Non-Profit award from the Corona Chamber of Commerce, the Bicycles for Children program and its volunteers got together on Dec. 20 and assembled and donated 683 bicycles to less fortunate students in eight of our local school districts.

The program started as an ambitious idea, coupled with a challenge from the Teacher Leadership Certification Academy at the Riverside County of Education. The program founder, John White, was tasked with coming up with a Capstone OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAProject that would benefit children. What started out as the goal to donate 155 bicycles to children in the 31 elementary schools in the Corona-Norco Unified School District, has grown to the point that 683 bicycles were assembled and donated to children in 82 schools around Riverside County.

On Dec. 20, over 250 local citizens, teachers, firefighters, and police officers stopped by El Cerrito Middle School and assembled the bicycles in just over 3 hours. Teachers and other school employees began picking up and delivering the bicycles later that day.

This is an amazing local-based charity which hopes to continue to grow in the coming years. They have set a goal of donating at least 850 bicycles and helmets to students in ten different school districts in 2015. Bicycles for Children will be donating bicycles to the Corona-Norco Family YMCA for their child care programs. Local police, sheriff, and fire departments will also be receiving bicycles to help in their community outreach endeavors.
