It’s October! And you know what that means, Fall! You don’t get to see it as much in Southern California, but there are a few deciduous trees around. Deciduous is a type of tree that loses its leaves. Did you ever wonder where the color of autumn leaves come from?
Leaves are nature’s food factories. They use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar. This is called photosynthesis, and it makes the leaves green with chlorophyll. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter.
In places that get cold, the trees rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can’t see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green! (Via)
Even though it’s warm here in Corona, you can still enjoy Fall. There are three great Fall Festivals coming to you! Enjoy apple cider, bobbing for apples, and a big piece of cake won from the Cake Walk. Soon enough it will cool down and you can trick-or-treat in the cool autumn air!
