Let’s Go Swimming!

It’s pure relaxation. Float on your back, with your ears underwater, and no cars, lawnmowers, neighbor dogs, or even kids can bother you. Close your eyes and imagine the hot sun on your face, and the cold water on your skin.

I’ve been a swimmer since birth–a regular water baby. My mom taught me to swim in Hawaii. I was still in diapers, but I learned to float right away, and eventually I was paddling across the pool. Soon my dad had me snorkeling and riding the waves on a boogie board. When I moved from Maryland to California I was ecstatic to be near the ocean again. And our apartment had its very own pool. My first summer here I spent every single day there.

Luckily my parents were great in the water and I learned really young. But a lot of people don’t know how to swim, or swim well. Many of the new friends I’ve made here in the Corona area have rarely been in the water and never had swimming lessons. Even without catastrophe, this can lead to nervousness around water. Water should always be a fun challenge, or relaxing and serene. Don’t give up on great activities. Get in the water!

The Corona-Norco Family YMCA is offering swim lessons in a safe and supportive environment.  Children and adults’ success in swim lessons is influenced by their comfort in the pool and on the deck. Our objective is to teach participants to swim and to be safe in and out of the water.

Swimming is great exercise and a lifetime sport. Take a break from the heat of summer and learn to swim. Swimming works most of the muscles in the body. Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. Other benefits of swim lessons include increased self-confidence, sportsmanship and goal-setting. Children gain a respect for the water and the skills necessary to make them safer around water.
