Their first year El Cerrito Middle School had seventeen Veterans come to their event and last year they had forty two Veterans join them. The event is May 16 at 9:00 a.m. and lasts for about an hour and a half.
The event begins with a greeting for the Veterans by the school band and students as they enter the parking lot. They are then checked in and provided with a gift bag and breakfast. Everyone then continues into an assembly with the students and Veterans that lasts about ten minutes. Finally the students are given the chance to interview a Veteran for about twenty minutes. The students then move into an interview with a second Veteran for the same amount of time. El Cerrito Middle School does their best to make sure that each student is able to interview two different Veterans from separate times of service.
After the interviews, everyone reconvenes for another assembly. In the past the school choir has sung a medley of patriotic songs and the songs from each branch of the military. However, this year they are trying to find a Navy band to perform for the Veterans.
It has turned out to be a great experience for both the students and the Veterans that participate. The students get a once in a lifetime experience and the Veterans in the past have been very pleased to know that the younger generations still honor and care about the sacrifices that they have made.
If you’re a Veteran and would like to participate, RSVPS are due May 15
